Ways to chip away that debt

I thought I would write about little ways that helped us chip away at our debt.

Well, firstly paying off debt is a daily decision. Most days you just feel helpless and others you just can't understand how you even got here! I know that the amount seems insurmountable but I promise you, the small wins eventually become big wins.

This is what we did…

  1. Bought food on yellow stickers. I started to know the times when food would be reduced. Morrisons was 7:00pm and Sainsburys was 7:30pm. On these trips I would find meat, fruit and vegetables reduced down to 10p!

  2. Reviewed all our utility bills - we switched and found the cheapest deals and tariffs. Our broadband, gas, electric and water all changed

  3. Ensured that each meal was stretched. One packet of mince now makes two dinners and a lunch! Bulk up meals with dried lentils and frozen vegetable and most importantly portion control

  4. Walking vs driving. Wherever possible we started to walk rather than drive, this reduced our fuel consumption

  5. Fakeaways. We started to make our restaurant favourites ourselves. Mexican nights, Pizza night, Burger night - you name it! All homemade and a lot cheaper!

  6. The word, No. Started saying no to attending social events, helping out of my means and not always buying celebration gifts

  7. Free entertainment, I was the girl that always believed that fun = spending money, but I started to find and see that what really matters is time spent with loved ones was the most important thing. So, a lot more night ins, bring and share sleepovers and picnics with my baby girl

I sincerely hope that some of the things we did will help you on your journey.
